 Lonesome Pine offers a special curriculum for
those residents interested in Family Practice/Hospitalist
Medicine in addition to the traditional Family Practice curriculum.
Wellmont-Lonesome Pine uses their three rural hospitals in Southwest Virginia along with the larger hospitals
in Bristol and Kingsport, Tennessee for some of the
subspecialty training.
Maurice Nida, DO, is the director of
medical education for Wellmont Health System residency
program. He has more than eighteen years of practice
experience in Southwest Virginia and thirteen years of
service as a medical education director. Dr. Nida is a
board-certified internist.
Thomas Roatsey, DO, is the residency
program director. Dr. Roatsey is board certified in
Family Practice and has a certificate of added qualification
in occupational medicine. In addition to his role as
program director, Dr. Roatsey will also serve as the director
of the continuity clinic. |
Dr. Derek Harman figures someone had to be first, and just because it’s him doesn’t make him special.
What is special for the 30-year-old Bluefield, W.Va., native is the opportunity to hone his medical skills under the tutelage of experienced physicians in small, rural health care settings where Harman intends to build his career.

Harman is the first medical resident of a joint program established by Wellmont Health System and Lincoln Memorial University’s DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) with rural health care in mind.
A 2008 graduate of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Harman began his three-year residency at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap in July.
Wellmont’s director of medical education, Wise County’s own Dr. Maurice Nida, said Harman is the first of many residents to come.
“I’m very happy here. It’s not a lot different, just not that big of a change from where I’m from (in
West Virginia),” Harman said. “It’s not a big deal for me, really, to be the first resident. I came here for the people and the directors with their long-standing history in family practice health care. It’s an honor and a privilege to be here, and I intend to make the most of it.”
Nida said Harman is special whether the fledgling physician likes it or not because the first always gets extra-special scrutiny.
Harman received a Wellmont “white coat” during a special ceremony a few weeks ago. LPH President David Brash, a regional vice president for Wellmont, said the ceremony placing the white coat on Harman was a major moment for the health system and region.
“While the results of this program will be evident in the excellent care patients will receive in our three Mountain Region hospitals, it is appropriate to take time to celebrate this achievement ,” Brash said at the time. |
“A lot of people have been diligent in bringing this program to reality, and I thank them for their efforts to improve the lives of our patients and the communities we serve. This is a watershed moment for Southwest Virginia.” |

The Southwest Virgina Museum:
The museum is housed in a mansion built in the 1880s by Rufus Ayers, a Virginia attorney general. The museum was bequeathed to the commonwealth in 1946 by C. Bascom Slemp, private secretary to President Calvin Coolidge and a member of the U. S. Congress. The museum was officially dedicated by the state in 1948. It features a collection comprised of more than 20,000 pieces, about one third of which is on display at any given time.
