The Puyallup Tribal Health Authority (Puyallup Tribe, Tacoma, WA) would like to announce the creation of the first Osteopathic Family Medicine Residency in the country to have a Native American focus. This new program has received AOA accreditation as of July 22, 2011, which will allow residents to start July 1, 2012.
Resident’s continuity of care will take place in the tribal clinic, Takopid Health Center, which includes adults and pediatrics, OB, traditional healing, podiatry, lab, x-ray, pharmacy, community health, mental health and dental clinics. Hospital rotations will take place at Tacoma General Hospital, which has a well-established and unopposed (allopathic) family medicine residency, and Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital. Our 2 residency programs have a unique collaboration, giving residents an outstanding platform for training and preparation for a successful medical practice in any setting. |

We are looking for residents who have a specific interest in Native American health and wellness, and recognize that Native Americans are among the many underserved populations in the Pacific Northwest as well as nationally. Tribal customs and traditional healing practices fit in seamlessly with osteopathic philosophy and we believe that this will strengthen the resident’s experience here.
